Cruising has become so popular as a holiday option that many of us know at least someone who has been on one. You may be wondering what all the hype is about.

An internet search will reveal that there is an enormous variety of cruise companies, packages, and options to suit everyone. You may be interested in testing the waters with a cruise holiday. Here’s what you need to consider before embarking on your first voyage.

Finding the right cruise package

There are a variety of ships and cruise packages available to suit just about everybody. Ask yourself where you want to go and what type of ship and cruise package you will get the most enjoyment out of.

Bigger ships typically have more facilities and activities on offer such as restaurants, bars, spas, adventure activities, events, and entertainment. Do your research before you book and ensure you have considered all options, including drinks packages.

Choosing a cabin

The accommodation options and their prices are varied on most cruise ships, and this can make it hard to decide what’s best suited to you.

Cabins range from top-level penthouse suites complete with extra space and balconies to budget family rooms and even shared bunk cabins. Start by deciding on your accommodation ‘must-haves’ and work your way down the list.

A good tip is to get in quickly to secure your ideal cabin and keep in mind that location is the key. You want to be close enough to your hot spots, yet not too close that you are impacted by noise and foot traffic.

Cover all your bases

The idea of cruising is so you can have a holiday that is relaxing and hassle-free. Everything is done for you, and you shouldn’t have to think about anything. However, incidents can happen such as injury, illness, theft, and loss.

You may want to consider a travel insurance policy that includes cruise cover. Some cruise providers may also require you to have travel insurance to board, so make sure you check their requirements ahead of time.

Hint

Pack a carry-on bag with swimwear, basic toiletries, and a change of clothes. There are thousands of bags that need to be processed before your luggage arrives at your cabin door. You may not have access to your luggage for hours after boarding so it’s best to be prepared.

Know what to pack

Pack for the season with your destination in mind. Keep in mind you are out at sea where nights can be cool and breezy.

Other than clothing and toiletries, items to consider include:

  • Reusable drink bottle

  • Spare electric power board

  • Medication

  • Mask and hand sanitiser

  • Portable phone charger

  • Sun hat and sun protection

  • Electronic devices/books.

Boarding procedures

Before you go, familiarise yourself with the ship layout and know what you need to do to board it effortlessly on the day. Have your travel documents ready and be aware that you may need a passport if you are visiting international destinations.

On the day, plan to arrive early and board your ship as soon as you can. That way you can take time to settle in, relax, and explore before the crowds.

Plan activities and excursions

Cruises usually have a daily activity calendar. It may be helpful to plan your day if you want to have lots of fun. Be mindful that some activities may double up or require booking ahead. Some may also come at an additional cost.

Take advantage of port stops and off-ship excursions. A break from the ship can be welcome and refreshing. Remember, the crew is there to help. If you are unsure about activities, just ask.

Find a place to relax

Holidays are for relaxing, and cruises are designed with relaxation in mind. However, there are a lot of people on board and sometimes you need an escape that’s not your cabin.

There are lots of nooks and hidey-holes on board a ship. Seek one out and be sure to take a good book with you.

What are you waiting for?

Cruising can be an international experience or a short cruise within national ports. With so many cruises and destinations available, you are sure to find a package that will suit you.

With these tips in mind, you will be well set for your first-time cruising and if all goes well, it may be the start of many more.
